Busy weekday mornings make it a challenge for families to find time for a healthy breakfast. However, US Department of Agriculture data show that more students are starting their day with a nutritious breakfast in their school cafeterias. To encourage more families to take advantage of the healthy choices available with school breakfast, West Central School will recognize National School Breakfast Week during March 6-10, 2017.
The National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) campaign theme, “School Breakfast Challenge”, reminds the entire school community that school breakfast provides a healthy, energizing start to the day for students. Students will be encouraged to “Take the Challenge’ by offering a free breakfast to all students March 8, 2017.
We believe a healthy breakfast at the start of the day is one way to ensure students are getting the best education they can. National School Breakfast Week helps us educate parents and students about all the healthy and appealing choices we offer. The district serves over 150 breakfast meals daily through the federally funded School Breakfast Program. Our breakfast participation is at 13%. We know the importance a breakfast can have with our students and innovating new ways to increase our percentage.
West Central Food Service prepare breakfast and lunches every day that meet federal nutrition standards – limiting fat, calories and sodium – and encourage students to choose from the fruits, vegetables and whole grains offered with school meals. At the MS/HS level, we know students are more likely to participate if we offer more grab and go type items then receiving the traditional breakfast items.
We (teacher, admin, education assistant, bus drivers, support team, custodial and foodservice) want our students to be successful during their school day and a hungry stomach will not help them learn. So let us “Take the Challenge” together.
