Students in the two Drama 1 classes this fall started their Children’s Theater units on the first day of class. On that day, each of the Drama students went to the library and they each checked out an elementary-level book. The librarians suggested several books that were especially popular with kids age 4-10 in our schools. From there, the Drama students read their books aloud, like an elementary teacher might, to their peers using character voices…which they had a lot of fun with! In small groups, the students then decided which of the books in our class would be most appealing to an elementary audience, and allow for each student in our Drama class to have a character role. Once those books were selected the students assigned casts for each of the chosen books and started writing them into scripts! They learned about characterization, stage direction, and the technical elements of assembling a play as they transformed their books into live-action productions. The students took complete responsibility for creating their set, costumes, props, and their scripts. They had total of 5 weeks to write, rehearse, build, and perform their Children’s Theater Project. The books that this Drama class selected were Lion, Tiger, Bear: Tag, Your’e It!, The Three Little Pigs & the Somewhat Bad Wolf, Red Cat, Blue Cat, and The Three Ninja Pigs. One of the Drama classes visited the Hartford Elementary on October 3rd, while the other took their shows to the Humboldt Elementary on October 5th. As their teacher, I guided these students through the process of rehearsing, memorizing, and performing for a young audience, but the effort of actually bringing these children’s books to life was completely on the students. I am so excited to say that they did a wonderful job. This project allows them to explore their own skills and abilities, and challenges all of them to grow in different ways. It’s a beautiful process to watch and I love starting my Drama classes this way! It’s a wonderful way to get to know these kids, and watch them get to know themselves. Kimberly Graff
